Carbondale Wayfinding Master Plan

The i5Group led the Wayfinding Master Plan for the City of Carbondale, Illinois. Team members include the Ten8 Group and Prairie Engineers. The master plan process started in late 2019 and the final Wayfinding Master Plan was released in July 2020.

Wayfinding refers to information systems that guide people through a physical environment and enhance their understanding and experience of the space. Wayfinding is particularly important in complex built environments such as urban centers, healthcare and educational campuses, and transportation facilities.

The coronavirus caused several in-person community engagement activities to be canceled. Instead of an in-person community open house to review the draft Master Plan, the i5Group hosted a “virtual” open house that consisted of two live webinars where residents could ask questions of the planning team. Recordings of the webinar were available for those who missed the live events.

The final master plan continues the momentum of investments in downtown and positioning Carbondale as the gateway to Shawnee National Forest and outdoor recreation. The bicycle and pedestrian elements build upon Carbondale's designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community.
